years, with the character of a worthy man, and an excellent chriftian; he perform'd the kind offices of a good neighbour at home, and made a fhining figure as a patriot in the fenate-house; he died with a peaceful conscience in the faith and hope of the gofpel, and the tears of his country were dropped upon his tomb.

The world, that knew the whole feries of his life, ftood amazed at the mighty change: They beheld him as a wonder of reformation, while he himself confefs'd and ador'd the divine power and mercy, which had transform'd him from a brute to

a man.

But this was a fingle inftance; and we may almost venture to write Miracle upon it. Are there not large numbers of both fexes among our young gentry, and among the families of quality, in a degenerate age, whofe lives thus run to utter wafte, without the leaft tendency to usefulness and reformation, and with a fcorn of all repentance?

When I meet with perfons of fuch a worthless character as this, it brings to my mind fome scraps of Horace,
