FROM VARIOUS AUTHORS,
TO AMUSE, INSTRUCT, AND EDIFY.

PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION.
In offering the following Selections to the public, I have only one object in view,—that of improving the minds of the rising generation, by submitting to their notice a variety of matter, not only fraught with deep instruction, as holding just and rational views of religion and morality, but, as presenting them in language such as may refine the taste, and give additional relish for correct composition. The Authors from whom the Extracts have been taken, are confined to no sect or denomination of Christians; but are, in their general character and professions, fit to stand as objects worthy of imitation.
Although the matter generally may be considered as of a grave and serious aspect, yet sufficient interest is excited by those occasional exhibitions of remarkable incidents, and singular providences, which form parts of some of the most striking articles ; so that I trust, amusement will be found combined with instruction ; and that the mind may, in the contemplation of these, acquire a degree of confidence and self-possession, which may tend to strengthen pious resolves, and remove some of the impediments which obstruct the approach to the narrow way which leads to Life, and in which alone safety can be experienced.
