generally in an allufion to all the concomitant circumftances, and characteristick marks of the period:-and therefore, that those concomitant circumftances (whatever they be) should be attended to,-as well as thofe great events, that either raise up, or break down Empires; or that fupport, or rebuke the People of God.

And I cannot but add to these remarks, concerning the dread effects of the spirit of Atheism, which, arifing originally from three great fources, has now fpread its direful influence fo wide in the world;-that it has hardly been enough confidered, how fatal the indulging a Spirit of irony, and burlesque, (which has ever been the great weapon of Atheism,) is to the cause of Truth.

It may fometimes, (though, furely very rarely) have been employed to fence against evil, and prefumptuous errour:-but it has, most unquestionably, been one of the chief engines, by which, both in printed publications, and on the ftage, the greater part of that mifchief has been spread, which has now fo dreadfully deluged the earth.
