A NOTE`

CONCERNING

MAN'S CONSISTING

OF

SOUL, AND BODY, AND SPIRIT;

REFERRING TO

IN further confirmation of what has been remarked, concerning the three-fold diftinction, fo obviously pointed out, in many paffages of Holy Scripture, in defcribing the nature of man's exiftence;-and concerning the peculiarly appropriate ufes of the words

veŭμa, and fun, it may be added; that those who have ever been acknowledged the most learned, and moft infpired Sacred writers amongst the Jews, and alfo St. Paul, who Ff 2

had

had been brought up at the feet of Gamaliel*, before be became the chofen, + Holy Apostle, feem to have adhered to this dif tinction, the most accurately.

Thus we read thefe remarkable words in the Book of Baruch, as rendered in the Septuagint.

Chap. ii. ver. 17.

Ver. 17. ̓́Ανοιξον, Κύριε, τὲς ὀφθαλμούς σου, καὶ ἴδε, ὅτι οὐχ οἱ τεθνεῶτες ἐν τῷ ἄδη, ὧν ἐλήφθη τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτων, ἀπὸ τῶν σπλάγχνων αὐτων, δώσεσιν δόξαν καὶ δικαίωμα τῷ Κυρίῳ.

Open, O Lord, thine eyes, and behold;because those who are dead in the grave, (or in bades) whofe SPIRIT is taken from their bowels, will not give glory and righteousness (or acknowledgement of juftification) to The Lord.

And here it may be obferved the word carefully ufed is πνεῦμα, and not ψυχή; but in the very next verfe the word u is as carefully used.

Ver. 18. ̓Αλλ' ἡ ψυχὴ ἡ λυπεμένη ἐπὶ τὸ μέγεθος, ὃ βαδίζει κύκλον καὶ ἀσθε νοῦν, καὶ ὁι ὀφθαλμοὶ ὁι ἐκλέιποντες, καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ ἡ πεινῶσα, δώσουσιν δόξαν σοι, κα δικαιοσύνη», Κύριε.

Ver. 18. But the SOUL that is vexed, most exceedingly, which goth hooping and feeble, eyes that are failing, and the SOUL which hungers, will give glory to Thee, and rightcountfs, Ο Lord!

and the

And in the Wisdom of Solomon, according to the Verfion of the Seventy, a careful diftination is again made, between πνεύμα and ψυχείο

Chap. 15.

Ver. 11. Ὅτι ηγνόησεν τὸν ποιήσαντα αὐτὸν, καὶ τὸν ἐμπνέυσαντα αὐτῷ ψυχὴν ἐνεργῆσαν, καὶ ἐμφυσήσαντα πνεῦμα ζω τικόν.

Ver. 11. Because he was heedless of Him robo made him, and who infpired (cr breathed into HIM AN OPERATING SOUL; and implanted in him (or endowed him with,) a LIVING SPIRIT.
