OF

THOMAS ARNOLD, D. D.,

LATE HEAD-MASTER OF RUGBY SCHOOL, AND REGIUS PROFESSOR OF MODERN
HISTORY IN THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD.

BY ARTHUR PENRHYN STANLEY, M. A.,

Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History in the University of Oxford. Third American from the last London Edition. In two vols., 12mo. Price $2. "He will strike those who study him more closely as a complete character: complete in its union of moral and intellectual gifts, and in the steady growth and development of both."-London Quarterly Review.

"His correspondence is the best record of his life, and affords the most vivid representation of his character. It presents us with the progressive development of his mind and views, till the one reaches the vigor and the other the comprehensiveness for which at length they became distinguished.”—Knight's Cyclopædia of Biography.

The accuracy and excellent judgment exhibited in the arrangement of the Correspondence and construction of the narrative long ago established Mr. Stanley's reputation as a worthy biographer of the noble Master of Rugby; the rapid sale of the former large editions of the work, and the constant demand for it while out of print, attest the interest which is felt in the details of the life and labors of Dr. Arnold. The Publishers, therefore, issue this new and carefully-revised edition, in the hope that it will meet with favor from the general public, and especially from all who are interested in the cause of Education. Every intelligent teacher should own these volumes; for the lessons they teach are of deep and permanent value. And in every School and Academic Library the "LIFE AND CORRESPONDENCE OF THOMAS ARNOLD" should hold a prominent place.

EXTRAORDINARY OFFER.

MR. CHARLES B. NORTON, Appleton's Building, as the agent of DAY & SON, London, offers to subscribers a set of the finest line engravings ever produced for $10 THE SET.

These are copies of the celebrated Cartoons of

RAPHAEL AT HAMPTON COURT.

Description of the Engravings.

1.-ST. PAUL PREACHING AT ATHENS.

"The varied groups-the fine, thinking heads among the auditors-the expression of curiosity, reflection, doubt, conviction, faith, as revealed in the different countenances and attitudes, are all as fine as possible."

"In this one great effort of Art is combined all that is great in drawing, in expression, and in composition."

11. THE CHARGE TO PETER (Feed My Sheep.)

"The figure of Christ is wonderfully noble in conception and treatment; the heads of the Apostles are finely diversified; there is great unity of effect in the design; great harmony and tenderness in the color."

III. THE DEATH OF ANANIAS.

"The grandeur of the design, heightened on the one hand by the astonishment and terror, and on the other softened by the pity and commiseration of the spectators grouped around the victim of supernatural punishment, affects the mind with an interest that belongs both to the truth of history and the force of the tragic drama."

IV. ELYMAS, THE SORCERER, STRUCK WITH BLINDNESS.

"A subject so beautifully treated endears the mind to an art which renders permanent evanescent expression of countenance, and exhibits a lasting reference for the forms of dignity and the modes of passion."

V. THE MIRACULOUS DRAUGHT OF FISHES.

"In this picture a majestic solitude contributes, by the contrast of its tranquility, to heighten the intensity of human feeling and exalt the sacredness of divinity."

VI. PAUL AND BARNABAS AT LYSTRA.

"Full of movement and interest; the most dramatic in effect of the whole series." VII. THE BEAUTIFUL GATE OF THE TEMPLE (Healing the Lame Man.) "The moral aim of the design, next in importance to its Scriptural purpose, is to inculcate the sentiment of unfailing pity for human suffering, from whatever cause it may arise, and to animate the practice of that benevolence which, apart from the direct interposition of heavenly aid, is its proper attribute."

The Engravings are all of the highest style of Line Engravings, and printed on paper, each of the size of 38x25 in.

The original proof impressions were published at $350.

Messrs. DAY & SON have determined to print a limited edition, to be distributed to subscribers only, and then destroy the plates. Mr. NORTON will have a few sets to dispose of.

When it is considered that these magnificent engravings are such as almost invariably cost $10 each, the surpassing cheapness at which they are now offered will be apparent. Each print is gotten up in the highest style of line engraving, and is on paper of the size of 38x25 inches.

Mr. NORTON will furnish a prospectus, giving full particulars, upon application at his office, where specimens may be seen.
