Second Examination in Medicine.

To pass the Examination the Candidate must obtain (a) a minimum 40 per cent. of the full marks in each Practical Examination, and (b) a minimum 40 per cent. of the full marks in each subject. Those of the successful Candidates who obtain two-thirds of the total marks obtainable will be placed in the First Class."

(2) That in the first line of the proposal under the heading "L. M. & 8. Examination" the figures "50" be substituted for the figures "40.” It was proposed by Dr. A. G. Viegas, L.M. & S., and seconded by Mr. K. K. Modi, B.A. :—

5. It was proposed by Mr. N. A. F. Moos, L.C.E., B.Sc., and seconded by the Rev. F. Dreckmann, S.J. :

(i) That the words " and Pass" occurring in Regulations 9 and 16 in Civil Engineering (pp. 83 and 86 respectively of the Calendar for 19021903), and the words "and a Pass" occurring in Regulation 23 in Civil Engineering (p. 89 of the Calendar) be deleted; and (ii) that in Regulations 32, 39 and 48 in Civil Engineering (pp. 94, 99 and 109 respectively of the Calendar) the words “the names being arranged in order of merit be substituted for the words "and Pass.......... alphabetical order." Carried.

6. It was proposed by the Rev. F. Dreckmann, S.J., and seconded by Dr. K. E. Dadachanji, L.M. & S. :

(p. 479 of the Calendar for 1902-1903) the figures 174 and 25 be substituted respectively for the figures 189 and 10.”

8. It was proposed by the Honourable Mr. Justice N. G. Chandavarkar, B.A., LL.B., and seconded by Dr. R. N. Khory, L.M., M.D., M.R.C.P. (Lond.), :

That the offer of Rs. 6,000 in 13 per cent. Government Paper from the Honorary Secretary, Lord Sandhurst Memorial Fund Committee, for the foundation of a Gold Medal in the name of Lord Sandhurst to be awarded annually at the L.M. & S, Examination, be accepted with the best thanks of the Senate and that the following Regulations be adopted for the award of the Medal :

It was proposed by Dr. R. N. Khory, L.M., M D., M. R.C.P. (Lond.), and seconded by Dr. K. E. Dadachanji, L. M. & S. :

(i) That a new Medical Degree to be entitled the Degree of M.B., B.S.-Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery-be instituted in place of the Degree of L.M. & S., the Previous Examination in Arts being required as the Standard of Preliminary Examination for the new Degree; and

(ii) that Regulations 1-34 in Medicine (pp. 75-79 of the Bombay University Calendar for 1902-03) be deleted and the following substituted in place thereof :

1. A Candidate for the Degree of M.B., B.S. must have passed the Previous Examination in Arts of the Bombay University, or an Examination in some University recognised by the University of Bombay, which is, in the judgment of the Syndicate, at least equivalent to the Previous Examination of this University. He must have been engaged during five University years in professional study at a School of Medicine recognised by this University.

FIRST EXAMINATION FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR
OF MEDICINE AND SURGERY.

2. The First Examination for the Degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery will be held annually at Bombay, commencing on the fourth Monday in September.

Candidates are strongly advised to take up Latin as the Classical language, which is required by the General Medical Council in England for registration.

3. No candidate shall be admitted to this Examination unless he shall have produced certificates to the following effect :

(a) Of having been engaged in professional studies for at least one academical year.

(b) of having attended the following courses

In Inorganic Chemistry.-One course of at least 50 lectures and demonstrations.

In Biology.-One course of at least 50 lectures and demonstrations.

In Practical Chemistry.-One course of instruction of three months.

In Elementary Experimental Physics.-One course of at least 50 lectures and demonstrations.

4. Candidates must apply to the Registrar two months before the Examination (vide Form AF.).

5. Each candidate must pay to the Registrar a fee of Rs. 25, for which a receipt will be given (vide Form AG.).

6. Failure to pass the Examination will not disqualify the candidate for presenting himself at any subsequent First Examination for the Degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery on a new application being forwarded and a fresh fee paid.

7. Candidates will be examined in the following subjects:

(a) Inorganic Chemistry and Practical Chemistry.

Difference between Mechanical Mixture, Solution and Chemical Combination. Laws of Chemical Combination. Quantivalence. The Atomic Theory aud its history. Molecules and Molecular Weights. Density of Gases. Relation between Density and Molecular Weight of Gas. Abnormal Densities.

Avogadro's Hypothesis. Volumetric Combination of Gases. Simple and Compound Radicals. Law of Substitution. Homologous Series. Relations between Atomic Weight and Specific Heat. Isomerism. Metamerism. Polymerism. Polymerism. Electrolysis." Outlines of Spectrum Analysis. Outlines of Crystallography, Dimorphism and Isomorphism. Chemical Notation.

Oxygen, Hydrogen, the Halogens, Sulphur, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Arsenic, Antimony, Boron and Silicon, and their principal compounds.

Carbon, Carbonic Oxide and Carbonic Acid. The Carbonates. Methane, Ethylene. Acetylene. Structure of Flame. Coal gas.

Potassium, Sodium. Ammonium, Calcium. Strontium, Barium, Magnesium, Zinc, Cadmium, Lead, Copper, Mercury, Silver, Aluminium, Manganese, Iron, Cobalt, Nickel, Chromium, Bismuth, Gold and Platinum.

The chief compounds of the above mentioned metals with the more important Acid Radicals and their detection in powder or solution.

(b) Biology.

Botany.-General Histology, Morphology and Physiology of plants. Connection between living and non-living matter, resemblances and differences between plants and animals.

Histology-Physical, chemical, physiological characters and the microscopic structure of vegetable protoplasm. Indirect division of the nucleus or karyckinesis. General account of the bodies of protoplasmic nature, and those resulting from metabolic activity in a plant cell. Nature and chemical composition of the cell wall and its various modifications. Cells, tissues, and, tissue systems of a flowering plant. The microscopic structure of the stem, root, leaf, anther, ovule, and seed.

Morphology. The general structure of a typical flower, fruit and seed. The parts of the dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous embryos The morphology, physiology and life history of saccharomyces (the yeast plant), schizomycetes (Bacteria), mucor (mould), spyrogyra, and a fern.

General Physiology.-The chemical composition and food of plants. The phenomena of absorption, circulation, transpiration, assimilation, respiration, excretion, and re-production of flowering plants. The phenomena of germination.

Systematic Botany. The principles of classification of plants. The Linnæan Artificial and Bentham and Hooker's Natural systems. The distinctive characters of the divisions, classes, sub-class, series and cohorts. The diagnostic characters of the following Natural Orders :

Papaveraceae, Leguminose, Compositæ, Rubiaces, Convolvulaceæ, Labiatæ, Scrophulariacea, Euphorbiaceae, Liliaceæ, Graminaceæ, Umbelliferæ, Palmaceæ.

Zoology.-General histology of the chief animal tissues. General outlines of embryology, microscopic characters of the ovum and the spermatozoon, Holoblastic and meroblastic ova. Maturation of the ovum. Fertilisation, segmentation, morula, blastula and gastrula stages. Formation of the blastoderm and its layers. The embryological origin of the organs. The origin of the mesoblast, and the formation of the caleome, the protovertebræ, amnion, allantois, and placenta. The life history of sporozoa with special reference to the hæmosporidæa. The general and microscopical structure of the diptera-anopheles and culex. The general description and leading points of interest in the Scolecida :-orders Tæniada and the Nematoda. The general organization, function and life history of the following type animals :

Amæba Paramecium, Vorticella, Leech or Earthworm, Lobster, Dogfish, Frog, Snake, Pigeon, Hare or Rat.

Practical

(4) Classification and recognition of the indigenous plants of the Natural orders mentioned above.

(b) Identification under the microscope of important tissues in plant and animal structure.
