Upon which Dr. Masina demanded a Division. Sir Bhalchandra Krishna, Kt., L.M., Dr. R. N. Khory, L.M., M.D., M.R.C.P., Dr. H. M. Masina, F.R.C.S., and Mr. N. G. Welinkar, M.A., LL.B., having been appointed as Tellers a Division was taken at the close of which Sir Bhalchandra Krishna and Dr. R. N. Khory reported that the number of votes against the amendment was 29 and Dr. H. M. Masina and Mr. N. G. Welinkar reported that the number of votes in favour of the amendment was 25. Whereupon the Chairman declared that the amendment was

When the voting papers were subsequently examined with a view to entering the names of the voters in the minutes it was discovered that among the slips collected on the side of those voting against the amendment one name had been accidentally duplicated and further that the slips collected on both sides contained a slip bearing the same name while the number of slips returned by the Tellers on the side of the amendment should have been 26 instead of 25.

It was proposed by Sir Bhalchandra Krishna, Kt., L.M., and seconded by Dr. K. E. Dadachanji, L.M. & S., that the meeting be adjourned till Friday the 25th September, at 5-15 P.M.

Before proceeding with the business, the Vice-Chancellor called upon the Registrar to state to the Senate the discrepancy which had been discovered between the reports of the Tellers at the Divis on taken at the last meeting and the results obtained from the examination of the voting papers.

Dr. Viegas's amendments, viz.—

(i) "That a Committee (to be named at the Meeeting) be appointed to consider and report to the Senate upon the desirability of altering the designation of the Degree of L.M. & S.,” and

(ii) "That Regulations accompanying the Proposition be referred to the Faculty of Medicine for consideration and report,

were ruled out of order under Bye-law 55.

It was proposed by Dr. M. G. Deshmukh, B.A., M.D., and seconded by Prof. H. M. Bhadkamkar, B.A., as an amendment:

(i) That in the introductory paragraph beginning with "Dr. R. N. Khory has given due notice," &c., all the words from "in place of the Degree of L.M.& S., in line 4to "fcr the new Degree" in line 5 be deleted and the words " in addition to the present Degree of L.M.& S." substituted for them; and

(ii) that the following be added to the next succeeding paragraph numbered 1, beginning with "A Candidate for the Degree of M.B., B.S.," &c :

"A Candidate for the Degree of L.M.& S. must have passed the Matriculation Examination of the Bombay University and must have been engaged during five University years in professional study at a School of Medicine recognized by this University and must have passed all the Examinations detailed below for the M.B., B.S. Degree, with such percentage for passing as the Senate may hereafter determine, in all the subjects mentioned, except that he need not pass in :

(a)(i) Zoology, under the head Biology in the First Examination for M.B., B.S.

(ii) Elementary Experimental Physics except Elementary Mechanics of Solids and Fluids, in the Examination.

(b) Bacteriology and Mental Diseases comprised in the subjects numbered 4 and 5 in paragraph 28, in the Final Examination for the Degree of M.B., B.S.

The amendment on being put to the vote was

Carried.

The Vice-Chancellor having remarked that the proposition then before the Senate was Dr. R. N. Khory's motion as modified by the above amendment, it was proposed by Sir Harkisandas Narottamdas, Kt., and seconded by Dr. Shantaram Vithal, L.M., that the meeting be adjourned to Wednesday the 30th September 1903.

Carried.

It was proposed by Dr. Shantaram Vithal, L.M., and seconded by Mr. K. Subramani Aiyar, B.A., L.T. :—

(i) That the asterisk after the word Arts in Regulation 1, line 1, and the foot-note at the end of page 1* be deleted.

(ii) that the following N.B.'s be added to Regulation 1 :

"N.B. (1).—The Examinations under the old rules will not be held after the year 1903, but Candidates who have already entered upon their professional study at a School of Medicine recognized by this Unversity will be allowed to proceed to their Examinations under this regulation, even if they have not passed the Previous Examination. Such candidates after passing the Final Examination will be eligible for the Degree of L.M. & S. only, but those who have passed the Previous Examination will be entitled to the M.B.,B.S. Degree.

N.B. (2). The Degree of M.B.,B.S. will be conferred upon candidates who pass the L.M. & S. Examination of November 1903, provided they have passed the Previous Examination. "

(iii) That the N.B. to Regulation 21 be deleted.

(iv) That the figure "40" be substituted for the figure "50" in Regulation 25.

The Vice-Chancellor pointed out that under Bye-law 53, N.B. (1) under section (ii) need not be discussed as it was covered by the amendment proposed by Dr. M. G. Deshmukh, B.A., M.D., &c., and seconded by Prof. H. M. Bhadkamkar, B.A., which was carried at the preceding meeting. The other parts of this amendment were put to the vote separately.

N.B. (2) under section (ii) was after some discussion withdrawn by Dr. Shantaram Vithal with the consent of the Senate. Sections (i) & (iii) were successively put to the vote and were

Mr. S. V. Bhandarkar, B A., LL.B., withdrew with the consent of the Senate the following amendment which stood in his name :—

That the following N.B. be added to Regulation 1 :

(a)" N.B.-Candidates who have already entered upon their course of study at a School of Medicine recognized by this University will be allowed to proceed to their Examinations under this Regulation even though they have not passed the Previous Examination in Arts. Such candidates after passing the Final Examination in Medicine will be eligible for the Degree of M.B., B.S., even though they have not passed the Previous Examination in Arts.

That the following N.B. be added to Regulation 1 :-

(b) "N.B.--Candidates who have already entered upon their course of study at a School of Medicine recognized by this University will be allowed to appear for the First Examination in Medicine, the Second Examination in Medicine and the Examination for the Degree of L.M. & S. under the Rules prescribed in that behalf at pp. 75-79 of the Calendar for 1902-1903 till the years 1905, 1907 and 1910 respectively." It was proposed by Mr. K. B. Wagle M.A., and seconded by the Hon'ble Mr. H. S. Dikshit, B.A., LL.B. :

(i) That the following words be added at the end of the N.B. to Regulation 7 :

"A candidate who has passed the Examination for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts or Master of Arts shall be considered to have completed his first year of study, but he shall not be allowed to appear at the Second Examination for the Degree of Bachelor of Medicine unless he has passed the First Examination for the said Degree in all those subjects thereof, in which he did not pass at his B.A. or M.A. Examination; and

(ii) that the following words be added at the end of clause (a) in Regulation 12 :-" or two years in the case of candidates referred to in the N.B. to Regulation 7"; and

(iii) that the words "or the Intermediate Science Examination" in clause (b) be deleted and the words "or of having satisfied the conditions of the N.B. to Regulation 7" substituted for them.

On being put to the vote this amendment was

Carried.

The Vice-Chancellar ruled that under Bye-law 53, section i, of the amendment of which Dr. G. B. Kher had given notice,

viz (i) That the following words to be added at the end of the N.B. to Regulation 7 :—

"A candidate who has passed the Examination for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts with group (d) Chemistry and Physics or with group (e) Natural Science for his voluntary subject, or who has passed the Examination for the Degree of Master of Arts in Branch V (Experimental Physics), or VI (Chemistry), or VII (Natural Science), shall also be similarly exempted from the First Examination for the Degree of M.B., B.S. and considered to have completed his first year of study, but he shall not be allowed to appear at the Second Examination for the said Degree of M.B., B.S., unless he passes the First Examination for the said Degree in those
