(ii) with the preparation of any of the organic substances contained in a list prescribed from time to time by the Syndicate.*

2. Inorganic Experiments and Qualitative Analysis.

(i) Candidates will be expected to be acquainted with the apparatus used for the ordinary experiments of the theoretical B.A. course in Chemistry and to perform any of the experiments prescribed by the Syndicate.t

(ii) Candidates will be examined in the analysis of any of the substances prescribed from time to time by the Syndicate.‡

3. Quantitative Analysis.

Candidates will be expected to be conversant with the analysis of any of the substances which are contained in a list prescribed from time to time by the Syndicate.§

Isopropyl-iodide.-Iodoform.-a-dichlorhydrin.

Lead formate and anhydrous formic acid from glycerine.-Phenyl-hydrazine by means of the hydrochloride from Aniline.

4. Substitution of the Amide-group by means of diazo-bodies.

Amido-azo-benzene.-3-Napthol-Orange.

5. Preparation of Esters.

Ethyl-oxalic ester.-Ethyl-benzoic ester (by E. Fischer's method).

6. Condensation.

Benzophenone from Benzene, Benzoylchloride and Ferric chloride.-Fluorescein.-
Cinnamic Acid from Benzaldehyde and Acetic acid.

7. Preparation of Nitro-derivatives.

Dinitro-benzene and nitro-aniline.-Nitro-salicylic-acid.

8. Oxidation.

Glyceric Acid from Glycerine,- Acetaldehyde. —Quinone. - Nitrosobenzene from
Aniline by the persulphate method.

(a) Law of gaseous diffusion as illustrated by hydrogen and air.

(b) Action of chlorine on organic colouring matter with and without the exclusion of moisture.

(e) Demonstration of the properties of chlorine dioxide.

(d) The preparation of oxygen and the ordinary combustion experiments.

(e) Combustion of air in coal gas.

(f) Changes undergone by sulphur under the action of heat.

(9) Experimental illustration of the manufacturing method of making sulphuric acid.

(h) The preparation and oxidising properties of nitric acid.

(1) The composition of air (oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, moisture).

() Spontaneous combustion of phosphorus in the finely divided state.

(k) Marsh's test for arsenic and antimony.

(Preparation and combustion of carbon monoxide (from oxalic acid). (m) Properties of carbon dioxide.

(n) Silicic acid dialysis.

§ List of substances at present prescribed by the Syndicate:

(1) Estimation of acetic acid in vinegar; nitric acid in nitre; alkali (total and carbonate and silicate) in soap; available chlorine in bleaching powder; chromium in chrome-iron stone; manganese dioxide in pyrolusite; nickel in nickel glance; sugar in cane sugar (by Fehling's method); tín in tin-stone.

(2) Complete analysis of

Bone-flour.-Coal-gas-Copper

pyrites.-Galena-Lime-stone-Nickel-silver

Red hæmatite.-Silver alloy.-Zinc blende.

Candidates will, at their option, be examined under old or new rules in the year 1904, but the Examination under old rules will not be held after the year 1904.

VII.-NATURAL SCIENCE.-Six Papers and Three Practical Examinations. (i) Zoology: 2 papers and a practical examination.

(ii) Botany: 2 papers and a practical examination.

(iii) Physical Geography and Geology: 2 papers and a practical exami

Animal Physiology: 2 papers and a practical examination.

Treated more fully than at the Examination for the Degree of B.Sc. (pp. 57-61).

58. In the week following the Examination, the Examiners in each branch will publish a list of successful Candidates in two Classes and Pass, the names in each Class and Pass being arranged in alphabetical order.

59. A Certificate will be given to those who pass the Examination. (Vide Form T.)

For the course prescribed under the old rules vide Appendix, pp. 100-110.

II-LAW.

BACHELOR OF LAWS.

1. Candidates for the Degree of LL.B. must have obtained the Degree of B.A. or B.Sc. in this University or in a University recognized by this University and will be required to pass two Examinations in Law, the first to be called the First Examination for the Degree of LL.B. and the second the Second Examination for the Degree of LL.B.

FIRST EXAMINATION FOR THE DEGREE OF
BACHELOR OF LAWS.

2. The First Examination for the Degree of LL.B. will be held once a year in Bombay, commencing on the third Monday in November.

3. No Candidate will be admitted to this Examination unless he produces a certificate in the Form U to the effect that he, after passing the Previous Examination in Arts at this University or an examination corresponding to it, in the judgment of the Syndicate, at a University recognized by this University, has kept two terms at some College or Institution recognized by this University in Law.

4. Candidates must forward an application to the Registrar two months before the Examination. (Vide Form U.)

5. Each Candidate must pay to the Registrar through the Principal of his College or otherwise, as the Syndicate may direct, a fee of Rs. 20, for which a receipt will be given. (Vide Form V.)

6. Candidates will be examined in the subjects of General Jurisprudence and Roman Law.

Candidates will be examined in the text books to be prescribed by the Syndicate at least one year before the Examination.

7. Failure to pass the Examination will not disqualify the Candidate for presenting himself at any subsequent Examination, on a new application being forwarded and a fresh fee paid.

8. The Examination will be conducted by means of printed papers.

9. On the morning of the second Monday after the commencement of the Examination, the Examiners will arrange and publish in two Divisions, each in alphabetical order, the names of such of the Candidates as may have passed.

10. A Certificate will be given to those who pass the Examination. (Vide Form W.)

SECOND EXAMINATION FOR THE DEGREE OF

BACHELOR OF LAWS.

11. The Second Examination for the Degree of LL.B. will be held once a year in Bombay, commencing on the fourth Monday in November.

12. No Candidate will be admitted to this Examination unless he shall have passed the First Examination for the Degree of LL.B. of this

University, and shall have obtained the Degree of B.A. or B.Sc. in this University, or in a University recognized by this University, and shall have, after passing the final Examination for the Degree of B.A. or B.Sc., kept four terms at a College or Institution recognized by this University in Law, in addition to the two terms kept for the First Examination for the Degree of LL.B.

N.B.-Candidates who at the B.A. Degree Examination attain in General Jurisprudence and Roman Law [optional subject (f)] the standard necessary for passing the First LL.B. Examination will be considered and declared to have passed the latter examination.

13. Candidates must forward an application to the Registrar two months before the examination. (Vide Form X.)

14. Each Candidate must pay to the Registrar through the Principal of his College or otherwise, as the Syndicate may direct, a fee of Rs. 30, for which a receipt will be given. (Vide Form Y.) Candidates who have passed the First LL.B. Examination in accordance with the N.B. to Regulation 12 shall pay the full fee for the LL.B. Degree of Rs. 50.

15. Candidates will be examined in the following subjects* :—

(1) Succession and Family Rights, with special reference to Hindu and Mahomedan Law.

(2) The Law of Contracts, and of the Transfer and Lease of Immoveable Property.

(3) Equity with special reference to the Law of Trust, Mortgages and other securities for money, and Specific Relief.

(4) The Law of Torts and Crimes.

(5) The Law of Evidence, Civil Procedure, including Limitation, and Criminal Procedure.

One paper will be set in each subject.

16. Failure to pass the Examination will not disqualify the Candidate for presenting himself at any subsequent Examination on a new application being forwarded and a fresh fee of Rs. 30 paid.

17. The Examination will be conducted by means of printed papers. 18. On the morning of the second Monday after the commencement of the Examination, the Examiners will arrange and publish in two Divisions, each in alphabetical order, the names of such of the Candidates as may have passed.

19. A Certificate will be given to those who pass the Examination. (Vide Form Z.)

20. It shall be left to the option of students who, before the coming of the new rules into force, have kept terms under old rules, whether they are to abide by the old or by the new rules.†

21. Candidates who have complied with Regulation 2 of the old regulations will not be required to comply with Regulations 3 and 12 above,

When the option allowed under this rule has once been exercised in favour of the new rules, it cannot be exercised a second time.

The regulation runs as follows:

2. No Candidate shall be admitted to the Examination [old LL.B.] unless he be a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science of at least two years' standing in the University of Bombay, or some University recognized by it, and unless he produce certificates to the effect that he has attended, for periods amounting to at least three years, three-fourths of the Lectures proper to his class, in some School or Schools of Law recognized by the University.

but will be allowed to appear for the First and Second Examinations for the Degree of LL.B. either separately or at one and the same time.

HONOURS.

22. The Examination for Honours in Law will commence on the fourth Monday in November.

23. The Examination will be open to any Candidate who has passed the Examination for the Degree of Bachelor of Laws held in one of the three years next preceding such Honours Examination.

24. Candidates must forward an application to the Registrar at least two months before the Examination. (Vide Form AA.)

25. Each Candidate must pay to the Registrar a fee of Rs. 50, for which a receipt will be given. (Vide Form AB.)

26. Each Candidate for Honours will be examined in each of the following subjects:

(a) Roman Civil Law.

(b) General Jurisprudence, including International Law.

(c) The several systems of Municipal Law which obtain in India.

Three papers will be set, one in each subject (a), (b), and (c): each paper may be divided into two parts, three hours being allowed to each part.

27. The Examination will be conducted by means of printed papers.

28. The Examiners will publish, on the Friday in the ensuing week, lists of the successful Candidates in two Classes, the names in each Class being arranged in alphabetical order. No Candidate shall be placed in the First Class, unless the Examiners are of opinion that he has exhibited considerable original ability as well as great industry.
