ROMANS I.

PAUL a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated

unto the Gospel of God, 2(Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy Scriptures,) Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

V. 4. If Christ had been raised by the power of the Father, or the Spirit only, and not by His own, how could He be declared by His resurrection to be the Son of God? What more had appeared in Him than in others? for others are raised by the power of God, if that were all. So in this respect Christ's resurrection was a marvellous resurrection. None ever did or shall rise, as Christ rose, by a self-quickening principle.-Flavel.

This verse is a remarkable instance of the Apostle Paul's manner of writing. Having mentioned a subject, his mind seems to catch fire; he presents it in new forms, and amplifies it until he seems for a time to forget the subject on which he was writing. It is from this cause that his writings abound so much in parentheses, and that there is so much difficulty in following and understanding him.Barnes.

By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name: Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ: To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. 8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.

The Church of Rome at the time when Paul wrote was a flourishing Church; but since then how is the most fine gold changed! Rome is not what she was; she was then espoused .a chaste virgin to Christ, and excelled in beauty; but she has since degener

ated, dealt treacherously, and embraced the bosom of a stranger; so that the Epistle to the Romans is now an Epistle against the Romans; little reason, therefore, has she to boast of her former credit.-M. Henry.
