TO THE READER.

IN order to understand the plan of the following Work, it is requisite the Reader should observe it is divided into THREE PARTS.

I. The object of the first is to present examples of the use of the various words; the etymology of which is more particularly traced in the Second and Third Parts. When the Work is used as a book of instruction, the preceptor will find it advantageous to cause the pupil to study the words in the second and third Parts; and then turning to the 1st part, require the etymology of the words. Suppose, for example, the etymology of the words in the first page of Part I. had been traced, let the pupil be asked the derivation of Abbreviate, Abdication, Aberration, Abject, and Abjuration.

II. The object of the Second Part is to point out the value of the Prepositions which enter into combination with other words *; in order to do this with more effect,

Prepositions, the most subtle part of speech, require deep attention in a simple state, much more do they require it when compounded. In this last capacity, they modify the term to which they are prefixed, with all the variety of power belonging to each of them when apart." Hill on Latin Synonymes.

III. In the Third Part, a list of Latin words is given, to which is subjoined all the English words that are derived from them. "Thus one leads to the knowledge of many, as a cluster of leaves or flowers is acquired by only seizing the stem on which they stand."

The First Part is the substance of notes made in the course of reading various books. For aid in the compilation of the Second and Third Parts acknowledgment is due to the etymological Works of M. Count de GEBELIN, of N. SALMON, and Dr. JONES: and likewise to the Dictionaries of Synonymous Terms, by Dr. TRUSLER Mrs. Piozzi, and Mr. CRABB.

TABLE OF CONTENTS.

Dictionaries are not usually paged, because the alphabet

serves as a guide; and from the same consideration Part I.

was not paged. As the principal object was to condense within

a small space as much matter as possible, the arrangement

which has been adopted was found requisite.-In order to fa-

cilitate the finding of the words referred to, Part II. and Part

III. have been paged, and the Reader is here presented with

a Table of Contents of those Parts.-Let us suppose the word
Concentrate be sought for; it will be found in its place in
the alphabet of Part I. with a reference "See CUM," the
page in which this word is placed may be immediately ascer-
fained by looking at the following Table.
