QUEEN'S COLLEGE,

BELFAST.

FOUNDED DECEMBER 30, 1845.

THIS COLLEGE is a CORPORATION under the name of style of "QUEEN'S COLLEGE, Belfast.”

THE GENERAL GOVERNMENT and Administration of the College under the Statutes, and in cases not provided for by the Statutes, is vested in the COLLEGE COUNCIL.

THE STUDENTS of the College are either MATRICULATED or NON-MATRICULATED.

OF THE MANNER OF ENTERING THE COLLEGE, AND OF PROCEEDING ΤΟ DEGREES AND DIPLOMAS IN THE QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY IN IRELAND,

In order to obtain a Degree or Diploma in the Queen's University, it is necessary to enter the College, to pass the Entrance or Matriculation Examination, and to pursue a fixed course of study.

The MATRICULATED STUDENTS may be classed as follow :

I. Those intending to proceed to the Degrees of B.A. and M.A. or to the Diploma of Licentiate in Arts.

II. Those intending to proceed to the Diploma of Elementary Law, or to the Degrees of LL.B. and LL.D. along with that of B.A.

III. Those intending to proceed to the Degree of M.D.
IV. Those intending to proceed to the Degree of Bachelor in
Engineering.

OCCASIONAL STUDENTS.

Persons may attend the Lectures of any of the Professors without passing the Matriculation or any other Examination.

THE COLLEGE SESSION.

FOR STUDENTS IN ARTS.

1874-75.

The FIRST TERM commenced on Tuesday, October 20, and ended on Saturday, December 19, 1874.

The SECOND TERM commences on Tuesday, January 5, and ends on Thursday, March 25, 1875.

The THIRD TERM commences on Tuesday, April 6, and ends on Saturday, June 12, 1975.

1875-76.

The FIRST TERM commences on Tuesday, October 19, and ends on Saturday, December 18, 1875.

The SECOND TERM commences on Tuesday, January 4, and ends on Thursday, April 13, 1876.

The THIRD TERM commences on Tuesday, April 25, and ends on Saturday, June 10, 1876.

EXAMINATIONS.

The Examinations are conducted in part orally and in part by papers; the number of questions is not greater than a person well prepared is able to answer in the time allowed.

FACULTY OF ARTS.

THE DEGREES OF B.A. AND M.A.,

AND DIPLOMA OF LICENTIATE IN ARTS.

Students intending to proceed to the degree of B.A. in the Queen's University in Ireland, must enter their names with the Registrar, and pay to the Bursar the fees set forth in the Statutes. They must then pass a Matriculation Examination in the English, Latin, and Greek Languages, and the Elements of History and Mathematics.

The General Matriculation Examination takes place at the commencement of the First Term. The names of those students who have passed the examination are declared on the following day: and the fees are returned to those students who have not passed the examination.

There is an additional Matriculation Examination in the same subjects, early in November, for those students who have not presented themselves at, or passed, the General Examination.

They must attend the College Lectures on all the subjects specified; and in those cases where the courses extend over three terms, they must attend during the first and second terms at least of each Session.

No Student shall get credit for his attendance at Lectures in the Faculty of Arts, as a part of his College Course, until he shall have matriculated.

A Student may extend his attendance on the Lectures prescribed for any one year over two Collegiate Sessions, provided he shall attend at least two courses of Lectures in each Session.

At the end of each Session there are "General Class Examinations" in the subjects upon which Lectures have been delivered during the Session.

There are also "Supplementary Examinations" in the same subjects, at the commencement of the following Session.

All Students must pass either the "General Class Examinations" or the "Supplementary Examinations" before their names can be entered on the College Register as having completed the Session, and before they can be allowed to go on to a subsequent year of College study.

REGULATIONS OF THE QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY IN IRELAND.

I.-COURSE FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF ARTS.

Candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Arts are required,

1. To have been admitted Matriculated Students of the Queen's University in the Faculty of Arts.

2. To have subsequently studied in one of the Colleges of the University the Course herein prescribed.

3. To have passed two University Examinations.

The course for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts extends over three Sessions, and comprises attendance on the following curriculum :

FIRST SESSION.

English (One Term).

Greek.

Latin.

A Modern Continental Language.
Mathematics.

SECCOND SESSION.

Logic (One Term).

Natural Philosophy.

:

Along with any two of the following:

Gaeek (Second Course).

Latin (Second Course).

A Modern Continental Language (Second Course),
Mathematics (Second Course).

THIRD SESSION.

English Language and Literature.

Metaphysics or History, or Political Economy,

(Two Terms).

Chemistry.

Zoology, or Botany.

Attendance on these courses includes passing such Examinations as may be appointed by the College Council, and the Catechetical parts of the courses of Lectures.

Candidates for the Degree of Bachelor in Arts must reside at their respective Colleges during at least the first two terms of each Session, but may be exempted from residence during the third term by a special grace of the College Council.

Third year students may substitute attendance on one or on two courses of Honor Lectures, for a like number of the courses above set down for study in the third Session. Candidates for the Degree of Bachelor in Arts shall pass two University Examinations-a Preliminary Examination and a Degree Examination.

The course for the Preliminary Examination shall include Greek, Latin, a Modern Continental Language, and Mathematical Science.

Students who have completed their Second Session must attempt the First University Examination before rising to the third year, unless prevented by illness or other inevitable accident, in which case the Senate may admit them to a Supplementary Examination.

Candidates who have attempted, but failed to pass, the First University Examination in October, will be admitted to a Supplementary Examination.

Candidates who have completed the Undergraduate Course, may offer themselves at the Degree Examination, for graduation either with Honors or without Honors.

If they seek to graduate with Honors, they must select for their Examination any one of the following groups,—

Candidates who seek the Degree without Honors, may select for their Examination any group of subjects from the following list, provided the sum of the numbers attached in this list to the selected subjects be at least four:

English Composition will form part of all University Examinations.
