PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION. B THE PUBLISHER. THIS work was first published in 1833. That edition, though a very large one, (3000 copies,) has been for some time exhausted, and the present publisher has made arrangements with Dr. Beaumont to publish another edition. Of the merits of the work, it is not necessary, perhaps, to speak. It has been for some years before the scientific public, who are the best judges of its value. That the author himself has seen no reason to change the views and opinions he entertained in 1833, on the questions then brought into discussion, will be sufficiently manifest when the reader is informed, that this second is simply a reprint, with a few verbal corrections, of the first edition. But if the verdict of the press, both domestic and foreign, scientific and secular, is to be regarded as evidence of merit and success, the author has succeeded beyond his most sanguine expectations. To insert these commendatory articles in detail would be to swell this preface to a volume.
