EDITOR'S PREFACE

UR second item is one of the rarest Revolutionary sermons, and the second which we have published on the same subject-the surrender of Corn wallis.

The author was one of the leading clergy of his time (1733– 1799) and pastor of the church in Brookfield for forty-two years; a man of remarkable literary attainments, author of a collection of essays, the "Moral Monitor," which was extensively used as a school-reader. His ministerial work was continued without any interruption and his bodily vigor was such that his last sermon was preached on the day of his death. His intellectual ability was notably transmitted to his granddaughter Helen ("H. H.") the world-famous author of "Ramona."
