of the mourner express very successfully the mingled feelings of sorrow, resignation, and hope.

Looking Out. London: Ackerman and Co. 1837.

THIS astonishing engraving, by W. O. Geller, of a portrait of a Smuggler, by H. P. Parker, is entitled LOOKING-OUT. A production of more originality or force it has rarely been our lot to notice. The introduction of a second frame into the picture heightens the effect. Every part of the portrait is finished with remarkable skill; the hard, weather-beaten lineaments of the sailor's countenance are preserved with a startling fidelity; his cap and neckerchief are wonderfully natural; and the drawing of the pistol, and the muscular hand that grasps it, might excite the jealousy of a Dutch artist. We recommend our readers to inspect the engraving,-to purchase it will be the natural con

sequence.

Reading the Scriptures. London: Ackerman and Co. 1837.

MR. HAYDON'S READING THE SCRIPTURES, engraved by Combs, is chiefly remarkable for the admirable effects of light and shade. The earnest thoughtfulness of the female, and the light thrown by the lamp in the centre of the table upon the Bible, are portrayed with great feeling. We strongly recommend this engraving to the public, as being admirably suited to remind us of the necessity of "Reading the Scriptures."

Ryall's Portraits of eminent Conservative Statesmen.

London: Fraser. 1837.

THE spirited and deserving Mr. Fraser is publishing the above work in numbers, which is likely to become extremely popular, both on account of the interest of the subject, and the admirable manner in which every department is executed. The work is to consist of twenty-four numbers, each containing three wellexecuted engravings of our Conservative Statesmen, accompanied with a memoir of each. Whether we look upon this publication as a memento of the exertions of the ablest and most talented men of the day, or as a work of art, we are quite sure that it deserves the patronage of the public, and is admirably calculated to portray the strenuous efforts of our Conservatives in behalf of their country, when they themselves are no more. We understand that Mr. Fraser is about to publish some Portraits of eminent British Females. We wish him every possible success in this interesting undertaking.
