MORE than twenty years have now elapsed since the first publication of The Law DICTIONARY by the present Editor; the Work was founded on the well known Compilations of the industrious GILES JACOB, enlarged and improved by the introduction of legal and historical information, to an extent which, in the Preface to that Edition, was explained in detail.

THE SECOND EDITION, published in 1809, was continued on the same plan to the end of the Session of Parliament 48 GEO. III. In that Edition several of the terms of the Law of SCOTLAND were introduced, as also occasional statements and explanations of the Laws in force in IRELAND, as compared with those in GREAT BRITAIN.

SINCE that time MR. GABBETT's very correct " Abridgement and COMPARATIVE VIEW of the Statute Law of England and Ireland" has been published: to which the Profession throughout the United Kingdom owe great obligations; and by which the reference to the Irish Statutes, and the knowledge of all the instances in which the British Laws have as yet been adopted in Ireland, are facilitated in both Countries.

ANOTHER PRODUCTION has also appeared, the Design of which is so excellent, that it is to be lamented that the Execution should be any way incomplete or inaccurate. But the Task of compiling an entire Collection and Arrangement of the BRITISH STAtute Law, with applicable Notes, is so extensive and difficult, that it becomes the duty of all who pursue the same track, to be thankful to MR. EVANS for what he has done, and to endeavour to supply what he has omitted.

To those useful Volumes, to the Statutes at Large, to the now ever-increasing Series of TERM REPORTS in the several Courts, as also to Treatises on separate branches of the Law, Reports from both Houses of Parliament, and to many other authentic Resources, Recourse has been had, for the purpose of rendering this THIRD EDITION of the Law DICTIONARY useful to the general Inquirer for information, and to the Lawyer, for reference.
