A MOST idle and unprofitable thing it is, in either writer or editor, to extend his prefatory remarks beyond the narrowest possible limits. A preface is no place for fine dreamings, or dainty images, and should be emphatically bald and utilitarian. The old read it only for the sake of some plain, prose hint, which may aid them in the better appreciation of the book itself. The young never read it at all. They are in a hurry to go a-Maying among the flowers and fancies which may deck the succeeding pages, caring little how they were planted.
