LITTLE ANNA AND HER BROTHER;

A STORY TO BE READ TO CHILDREN OF THREE OR FOUR YEARS OLD.

ANNA was a little girl of four years old, and she had a dear little brother who was only two years and a half old, whom she loved very much, and his name was Richard. He was a sweet little smiling fellow, with blue eyes and rosy cheeks, and he was almost as fond of Anna as she was of him.

Well, one morning, when poor little Richard came in from his walk, he was very ill; his head ached sadly, and he could not eat any dinner. He could not play, and he could not sit up: he could only cry, and put his hand to his head. His Mamma and

nurse undressed him and put him to bed; and the doctor was sent for, and gave him. some physic to do him good; but still poor little Richard did not get any better; and he was so ill that Anna was taken to sleep in another room; and she did not see her dear little brother at all for four whole days. At the end of four days, little Anna saw that her Mamma looked very sorrowful and very pale, and that her eyes were red with crying, and Anna said, "Mamma, is Richard very poorly still?" Then her Mamma cried again, and she said, "My child, your dear little brother is very ill indeed, and the doctor is afraid that we are going to lose him-that he will die." Anna cried too, when she heard her Mamma speak in this manner; and she said,

He had not had one sweet sleep all those four days and four nights, since Anna had seen him before, and he had been so sick that he had not eaten anything at all, or drunk anything but physic, except some cold water, all that while; and he was continually moaning and crying with pain, and his poor little hands were quite burning hot. When Anna saw this sorrowful sight, she felt very, very sad-and she said to her Mamma, "Oh Mamma, is there nothing we can do to make dear little Richard better?" And her Mamma said, "There is one thing that you can do for him, my dear little girl; you can pray to God for him-God loves to
