on the contrary, she called out, "Miss Julia, my dear, you are pulling his hair-you had better leave it to me, you don't know how to do it, my dear;" and Johnny, who had been put quite into a passion by being so much teased, I am sorry to say, gave Julia a slap. "Well go away, you tiresome, naughty boy," cried Julia, pushing him off the chair as roughly as she had dragged him up upon it before, "it's quite impossible to make your hair nice! Come here, Mary, and I will wash your face and hands for you:" so she left poor Johnny crying, and seizing upon Mary, pulled her to the washing-stand.

"Never mind, Johnny," said kind little Susan, "come and sit down here, by me, like a good boy, and you shall have some of the flowers;" so she quieted him in a minute, and Johnny was presently as happy and as good as could be, laughing and chattering to Susan, and playing with the flowers, of which

Susan was making nosegays, tied round with thread, and daisy-chains, to please her little cousins. In the meantime, the baby, whom nurse had got into a good temper again, by talking to and dancing her, now began, in her turn to look after the flowers, and to laugh at Susan, and at the two little boys, when they held them up to her; and at last, she stretched out her little arms, and plainly wished to join the party. Susan was too modest to propose to take the baby; for, she thought to herself, "Perhaps, I could not hold her properly;" but nurse, seeing how steady Susan was, and how sensible, said,"Would you like to have the baby in your arms, Miss Susan? Perhaps she will come to you; for she seems quite pleased with you:" so, Susan was quite delighted, and nurse put the baby into her lap; and Susan was so clever with her, giving her first one thing and then another, to amuse her, and finding out

all her little wishes, that the baby never cried, but, seemed as good with her as with nurse. At last, nurse said, "I really think, Miss Susan, she would be good with you, whilst I comb Master Johnny's hair, and change his frock: you play with her so nicely." So nurse combed Johnny's hair, and put on his clean frock (for she had washed him before); and baby was good all the time; and she had just begun to take off Johnny's shoes and stockings when she heard a great crash, at the other end of the room, and looking up, perceived that Julia had just pulled down a whole basonful of water over poor little Mary, and broken the bason by the fall! Nurse had long been expecting some such accident; and she had called out three or four times to Julia, to tell her to take care; for, Julia all the while that she was attempting to wash Mary, was talking to her so fast and in such a conceited manner,
