AT PREFACE. T the end of a year's work as Secretary to the Victoria Institute, in issuing the first volume of Transactions which it has been my privilege to see through the press, I would wish to acknowledge the generous support and assistance which I have received from the Council and Members; a support which has been most encouraging, and a friendly assistance which has gone far to lighten my labours. In particular I take this opportunity of acknowledging the untiring efforts of Mr. A. E. Montague, whose zealous work at a critical time has been of the greatest value. The report of the Council, which deserves the most careful consideration of all who are interested in the work of the Institute, deals with the events of the past year in a manner which obviates the necessity of any further preface to a series of papers which from the interest already taken in them, and the attendances at their delivery, would seem in no degree to have fallen behind those of previous years.
