And who that reads the words of prophecy, but must rejoice in the hope, that Athens, once the seat of the arts and sciences, will again hear the glad tidings of salvation by the no longer unknown God?
May the Prince of Peace, if it be his will, make our nation the humble instrument of this enlightening knowledge of a true faith; and spare both her féllow Christians, and their foes, from the desolations of war, pestilence, and famine. O! may he once more say to the Greek Church, in the sublime words of Isaiah, his inspired Prophet, to the Church erected by our Lord, and his own instructed apostles: "Arise, shine, for thy light is come; and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising."
Having thus proved the existence of the Deity, not alone from the best source of all knowledge, his own inspired word; but also from the concurring opinion of mankind in all countries, and in all ages; let us bless God for this "knowledge of his truth;" praying that it lead us "unto life everlasting." "For the Lord our God is a great God, and a great King above all gods."
As Christians, we are perpetually hearing the repetition of those commandments which God himself spake to the people of Israel upon Mount Sinai. As faithful followers, and disciples, of our Lord Christ, we are commanded to observe those two great precepts: 661 "to love the Lord our God, and to love our neighbour;" "for upon them hang all the law and the prophets."
It is the affecting evidence of a holy life, which speaks to the heart of man, and proves that what we teach is true. And, in this excellent sense, every true servant of Christ becomes a teacher of the Gospel; like our Divine Master, adorning his belief by his actions while, in our particular calling, as ordained ministers of his Gospel, we are cheered in the awful responsibility attached to our peculiar labours in his vineyard, by constantly meeting our brethren in the house, and at the altar of our Lord.
It is the desire of every good mind to promote peace and unity; and, therefore, we devote ourselves to that blessed object, in declaring to you the gracious words of eternal life.
beloved brethren, it is not possible
to affect your hearts only; but our Own must feel in a similar manner, when we procure our information from the sacred book of God.
Let not, then, the Infidel seduce you from the house of the Lord our God, or lead footsteps from his holy table. Resist the tempter, and he will flee from you; fear him not; but use the words of Scripture Revelation jointly with the history and experience of all ages; and your enlightened reason will soon overcome his vain objections.
Look to his dealings with his fellow men, as the proof of his mind's integrity. Remember the lives of many modern philosophers of the new school, and bring them to the one unerring test. Compare them with the words and actions of Jesus Christ.
For, then, will you come, and worship,
and fall down; and kneel before the Lord our Maker;" then will you gladly, and continually, acknowledge that "he is the Lord our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand."
Then will you here proclaim the everlasting goodness of our God; and at the last trumpet's
sound, your awakening souls will pour forth grateful strains of praise, making the once silent tomb resound with songs of joy-joy enduring through eternity!
GOD PERSONALLY SEEN.
EXODUS XXIV. 9, 10.
THEN WENT UP MOSES, AND AARON, NADAB AND ABIHU AND SEVENTY OF THE ELDERS OF ISRAEL: AND THEY SAW THE GOD OF ISRAEL.
ACCORDING to the Holy Scriptures, God has been pleased, at many separate times, to give to men a positive proof of his actual existence as a Person, or Supreme Being; by appearing unto the children of men even in this life. Of which our text affords us a very remarkable instance; for God himself had commanded their attendance; and, accordingly, they went up into Mount Sinai, " and they saw the God of Israel.”
“And there was under his feet, as it were, a paved work of sapphire stone, and as it were
