And when I learn my hymns to say,
And work, and read, and spell,

I will not think about my play,
But try to do it well.

For God looks down from heaven on high,
Our actions to behold,

And he is pleased when children try,
To do as they are told.

GOODNESS OF GOD TO PRAYING CHILDREN.

God is so good that he will hear,

Whenever children humbly pray;
He always lends a gracious ear,
To what the youngest child can say.

His own most holy book declares,
He loves good little children still,
And that he listens to their prayers,
Just as a tender father will.

He loves to hear an infant tongue
Thank him for all his mercies given,
And when by babes his praise is sung,
Their cheerful songs are heard in heaven.

THE BUSY BEE.

How doth the little busy bee
Improve each shining hour,
And gather honey all the day
From every opening flower.

How skillfully she builds her cell, How neat she spreads her wax; And labors hard to store it well, With the sweet food she makes.

In works of labor, or of skill,

I would be busy too; For there is always something ill For idle hands to do.

In books, or work, or healthful play,
Let my first years be past;
That I may give for every day,
Some good account at last.

BEING KIND AND AFFECTIONATE.

The God of heaven is pleased to see
A little family agree ;
And will not slight the praise they bring,
When loving children join to sing.

For love and kindness please him more
Than if we give him all our store ;
And children here, who dwell in love,
Are like his happy ones above.

The gentle child, who tries to please,
That hates to quarrel, fret and tease,
And would not say an angry word-
That child is pleasing to the Lord.

Great God! forgive whenever we
Forget thy will and disagree ;

And grant that each of us may find The sweet delight of being kind.

EVENING PRAYER.

Now condescend, almighty King,
To bless this little throng,
And kindly listen while we sing
Our pleasant evening song.

Before thy sacred footstool see
We bend in humble prayer,
A happy little family,

To ask thy tender care.

May we in safety sleep to-night,
From every danger free,
Because the darkness and the light
Are both alike to thee.

The moon is very fair and bright,
And rises very high;

I think it is a pretty sight

To see it in the sky;

It shone upon me where I lay,
And seemed almost as bright as day.

The stars are very pretty too,
And scattered all about:

At first they seem a very few,

But soon the rest come out. I'm sure I could not count them all, They are so very bright and small.
