Come, my love, and do not spurn From a little flower to learn ; Let your temper be as sweet, As the lily at your feet; Be as gentle, be as mild; Be a modest, humble child.
'Tis not beauty that we prize, Like a summer's flower it dies; But humility will last, Fair and sweet when beauty 's past, And the Saviour from above, Views a humble child with love.
When little Samuel woke
And heard his Maker's voice, At every word he spoke,
How much did he rejoice. O blessed, happy child, to find The God of heaven so near and kind.
If God would speak to me, And say he was my friend, How happy I should be,
O how should I attend. The smallest sin I then should fear, If God Almighty were so near.
And does he never speak ? 0 yes; for in his word, He bids me come and seek The God that Samuel heard.
In almost every page, I see, The God of Samuel calls to me.
Like Samuel let me say, Whene'er I read his word, "Speak, Lord, I would obey
The voice that I have heard." And when I in thy house appear, "Speak, Lord, thy servant waits to hear."
This day belongs to God alone, He chooses Sabbath for his own, And we must neither work nor play Because it is God's holy day.
'Tis well to have one day in seven, That we may learn the way to heaven ; Or else we never should have thought About religion as we ought.
Then let us spend it as we should, In praising God, and growing good, And be the better every day, For what we heard the preacher say.
And every Sabbath should be pass'd As if we knew it were our last, For what would dying people give, To have one Sabbath more to live.
GOD MADE THE SKY.
God made the sky so bright and blue, God made the grass so green ; He made the flowers that smell so sweet, In pretty colors seen.
God made the little bird to fly,
How sweetly she has sung; And though she soars so very high, She won't forget her young.
God made the cow to give nice milk, The horse for us to use;
I'll treat them kindly for his sake, Nor dare his gifts abuse.
God made the sun that shines so bright, And gladdens all I see ;
It comes to give us heat and light, How thankful I should be.
In a modest, humble mind, God himself will take delight; But the proud and haughty find They are hateful in his sight.
Jesus Christ was meek and mild, And no angry thoughts allowed; Oh, then, shall a little child Dare to be perverse and proud ?
This, indeed, should never be ; Lord, forbid it, we entreat; Grant that all may learn of thee, That humility is sweet.
