MY

LITTLE HYMN BOOK.

~

I THANK you, thank you, mother dear,
For such a pretty book;

And when these hymns I read or hear,

I'll have a pleasant look.

I'll learn to say the little hymn,

Which teaches me at night,

To think how good my God has been,

And thank Him for the light.

And I will also learn to say

Another song of praise,

To make me thankful night and morn,

And all my future days.

LITTLE CHARLES.

Oh where, where is my basket gone?
Said little Charles one day;

I do believe some boy or girl
Has taken it away.

And kitty, too, I can't find her,
Oh dear, what shall I do?

I wish I could my basket find,
And little kitty too.

I'll go to mother's room and look,
Perhaps it may be there,

For kitty loves to take a nap

In mother's easy-chair.

Oh mother, mother, come and look,
See what a little heap;

My kitty's in the basket here,
All cuddled down to sleep.

So then he took it carefully,
And brought it in a minute,
To show it to his mother dear,
With little kitty in it.

WILLIAM'S SISTER.

William's sister 's very small,
Too young to work or talk at all,
And he will leave his books and play,
To kiss her twenty times a day.

And then it does delight him well,
To hear his kind good grandma' tell,
How he shall soon on horseback ride,
With little sister by his side.

SNOW-BIRDS.

Come, sweet little snow-birds, and pick up the snow,
Which in plenty has fallen to-day,

Before the south wind begins softly to blow,
And melts all your treasure away.

Come, muster a flock, and descend to the ground,
Pray, little birds, don't be frighted,
We'll be still as we can, while you scramble around,
And we'll gaze through the window delighted.

I like to see a little dog,
And pat him on his head,
So prettily he wags his tail,
Whenever he is fed.

Some little dogs are very good,
And very useful too,

And do you know that they will mind,
What they are bid to do?

Then I will never beat my dog,
And never give him pain,
Poor fellow! I will give him food,
And he'll love me again.

I like little pussy,

Her coat is so warm,
And if I don't hurt her,
She'll do me no harm.

So I'll not pull her tail,

Nor drive her away,

But pussy and I

Very gently will play.
