The journal of yesterday was read and approved.

RESOLUTIONS.

By Senator Welch:

Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the two houses of the legislature meet in Joint Convention in the assembly chamber at 12 M., January 9th, to receive the message of his excellency, the governor.

Which was adopted.

Senator Reynolds moved that a recess be taken until 11:40 A. M. Adopted.

Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That a committee of one from the senate, and two from the assembly, be appointed to invite their honors, the judges of the supreme court and the state officers, to attend at the joint convention of the legislature, to hear the message of his excellency the governor.

Which was adopted, and Senator Dering appointed as such committee on part of the senate.

By Senator Price:

Res. No. 4, S.,

Resolved, That the senate will, at the hour of 10:30 A. M. of the 10th inst., take up as a special order resolutions of respect to the memory of the deceased senator from the 23d district.

By Senator Hudd:

Res. No. 4, S.,

Resolved, That the superintendent of public property be directed to furnish each senator with one copy of the revised statutes of 1878, and one copy of the general laws of 1878.

Senator Price offered the following amendment:

Amend by adding the words "to be returned to the superintendent of public property at the end of the sesson."

The committee on legislative expenditure, to whom was referred No. 1, S.,

A bill to amend section 113, chapter 10, of the revised statutes of 1878, to furnish stationery to the chief clerks and sergeant-atarms of the senate and assembly, for the use of the legislature, have had the law under consideration, and respectfully report the same back with an amendment, and recommend the passage thereof when so amended.

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSEMBLY.

MR. PRESIDENT: I am directed to inform you that the assembly is now ready to receive the senate in joint convention for the purpose of hearing the message of his excellency, the governor.

By direction of the president,

The senate repaired to the assembly chamber to meet the assembly in joint convention, to listen to the reading of the message of his excellency, the governor.

JOINT CONVENTION.

The senate and assembly being in joint convention,
Senator Welch offered the following resolution:

Resolved, That a committee of one from the senate and two from the assembly be appointed to wait upon his excellency, the governor, and inform him that the senate and assembly, in joint convention assembled, are ready to receive his message.

Which was adopted, and Senator Welch and Assemblymen Bentley and Ostrander were appointed by the president to discharge the duties assigned them.

Soon returning with his excellency, the governor, accompanied by the state officers, who were presented to the joint convention by the president, Lieut. Gov. J. M. Bingham.

The governor then delivered his

ANNUAL MESSAGE,

Fellow citizens of the Senate and Assembly:

We have ample reason to be profoundly grateful to Almighty God, for a continuance of his protecting care over us as a people and as individuals. The state finances are in a healthy and satisfactory condition, and the people are far removed from want and suffering; but there remains a depression in business, and a consequent disquietude, which it is our duty not to ignore when considering questions involving the appropriation and expenditure of the public funds. I therefore invite your careful scrutiny into the transactions of the past, and your efficient co-operation in the interests of a wise economy for the future.

The condition of the several funds at the close of the fiscal year, with a brief statement of the amounts received and disbursed on account of the

summarized from the reports of the Secretary of State and Stat Treasurer, is as follows:
