PREFACE. SOME OF THESE TALES in illustration of proverbs and bye-words have previously appeared, the others see the light for the first time. All the historical ones are intended to describe what might have been rather than what actually was, except 'Buy a Broom,' which is founded on one of the many stories of the adventures of Charles V. in disguise.
