PRELIMINARY TO THE ORGANIZATION OF THE

AGASSIZ INSTITUTE

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.

In pursuance of a notice given at the close of a lecture by Professor Louis Agassiz, a number of persons interested in the formation of a Natural history Society met in the rooms of the Sacramento City Library on the evening of the 14th October,

1872.

An organization was effected by calling Dr. T. M. Logan to the chair and appointing F. E. Patton as Secretary pro tem. Dr. Logan, on taking the chair, while thanking the meeting for the honor conferred, expressed his regret that the post of honor had not been assigned to abler hands. He presumed that after the notice that had appeared in the daily papers, it was hardly necessary to state the objects and ends of the meeting-the name of the "Agassiz Institute, "as proposed, covering the whole ground and embracing all that might be said in explanation of the subject. He said that it would be out of place to make any set remarks, and that he felt incompetent to make a speech, and, even had he prepared himself to do so, it would have been impossible to say anything commensurate with the comprehensive idea expressed in the personal title chosen for the association, that was about to be inaugurated for the cultivation and prosecution of the natural sciences in Sacramento. We had to deal with facts tangible and visible-natural productions or material things, as opposed to things moral or imaginary. And
