ORGIVE my presumption in placing Your

Honourable Name in the front of this Second Part
of

my Gleanings of Natural History, without Your
knowledge or consent: It is Your Lordship’s great love

of,

of, and encouragement given to Natural History, that has emboldened me to lay this little Effay at Your feet, being well assured of Your Lordlhip’s goodness in protecting all who sincerely endeavour, with strict truth, to bring new and undiscovered subjects in Nature to light.

We have good reason to hope, that His Majesty's late glorious and many Conquests over His and the Nation's enemies, will lay the foundation of a lasting peace, and add repose to the latter part of His Majesty's reign, and security to future times, wherein Learning, Arts, and Commerce may flourish to their highest degree.

I flatter myself with hopes that (when I am no more) the rising generation will find a powerful patron to all kinds of useful, polite and curious studies, as well as to the fine Arts, since His Royal Highness the Prince has given such signal proofs of fine taste and genius for the Sciences : And I am confident your Lordship will take
