T HE Inftruction of Children having been always thought, by wife Men, of great Ufe, both with regard to the prefent Age, and to Pofterity; and most of the Books, which have been made use of to introduce Children into an Habit of Reading, being Such as tend rather to cloy than entertain them; I have thought fit, with fhort Defcriptions of Animals, and Pictures fairly drawn (which last Experience fhews them to be much delighted with) to engage their Attention. I have therefore extracted from Jome of the most confiderable Authors a short Account of Beafts, Birds, Fishes, Serpents, and Infects; which, I hope, will prove the more acceptable, there having been nothing done (that I know of) in this Nature, fo compendioufly, for the Entertainment of Children. I bave forborne to be very particular in the Defcription of thofe Animals, which almost every Child is acquainted with.
